mid length asymmetrical hairstyles have been associated with increasing male attractiveness, and they were found to be more desirable with increasing age.

A study published online and online July 30, 2013 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, finds a relation between perceived attractiveness of women and perceived masculinity. The researchers found that perceived masculinity predicts a person's perceived attractiveness in a range of ways, from being the most attractive young person to being least attractive, with each sex having a different level of attractiveness.

The authors noted that these differences in perceived masculinity were not due to different sex characteristics, but based on an underlying psychological experience of gender.

"These findings are consistent with findings that predict higher and lower body weight, higher and lower sexual attractiveness, and less sexual attractiveness after adolescence, according to studies of self-reported personality traits," say the authors of the study. "In some cases, these measures have been found to improve men's self-esteem and sexual satisfaction, by suggesting that perceived masculinity is associated with increased sexual attractiveness and the self-fulfilling potential of young men."

According to the study, the male participants perceived the female participants' attractiveness to be higher than the female participants' sexual attractiveness and were more or less likely to experience sexual aggression. Participants who perceived their relationship partners' attractiveness to be less romantic and more attractive described their romantic partners as having the lowest attractiveness levels. In other words, perceived masculinity appears to signal to men that their relationship partners' sexual interest
